Panel-Description
Since the emergence of computer technologies the notion of „location“ has been expanded. From the beginning, digital media were seen as world-generating technologies being able to create alternative forms of „locations“, e.g. virtual environments. Currently, tendencies like ubiquitous computing and wearable computing point to a further dimension of “location”: hybrid spaces in which moving, multi-sensing, and interacting may reach new levels of intensity. This causes a paradigm shift in digital technologies, because the simulation of virtual spaces is substituted by experiments with interaction and digitally expanded perception in physical space. Thus, mobile and pervasive technologies will change the future design and artistic opportunities of Human-Computer-Interfaces. Furthermore, their extended responsiveness will modify the individual’s perception and notion of the self.
The panel aims to discuss different artistic approaches to hybrid spaces and the notion of “location”, starting with our own project of a responsive environment, which is designed as physical space, composed of different materials and changing atmospheric components like shapes, light, sound, smell, temperature or airflow. Using sensory and feedback technologies we aim to establish a close relation between the humans and this environment to question the idea of an immediate experience as it is currently discussed in phenomenological approaches like those of Brian Massumi and Mark B.N. Hansen.
We want to invite artists and researchers working in similar directions to generate an interdisciplinary approach which promises to match theory, art and holistic experience. By this we also aim to critically reflect the consequences of current technological developments heading towards an “interfaceless“ connectivity between humans and machines (like in biofeedback technologies) and/or the design of an ‚intelligent‘ environment (as intedend e.g. by ubiquitous computing applications).
