Hegemony or Resistance? The Ambiguous Power of Communication

This year’s conference theme seeks to explore the ambiguous relationship of communication towards hegemony and resistance. It relates, for example, to the various ways in which communication has been described not only as a value of our times – echoing an ideal for social transparency and communality – but also as a threat in terms of global domination. This ambiguity has prompted debates in academia about communication being at the same time a value and a tool, a space of consent and one of struggle, and having (more authentic) local and global dimensions.

Media Art History » RECREATE 2015

Re-Create: Theories, Methods and Practices of Research-Creation in the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology.

Montréal, 4-8 November 2015

Re-Create 2015 will mark the 10th Anniversary of the
International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and
Technology.
The conference will be hosted by two Hexagram sites at
Concordia University and Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), core
antennas of the largest network dedicated to research-based creative
practice in media art, design and technology. The venues are centrally
located in vibrant, downtown Montréal – the digital arts capital of
North America.

The conference returns to Canada since the inaugural event Refresh!
in Banff in 2005 to reflect on and re-examine topics of driving concern
that have continually arisen at the previous MAH editions in Berlin
(2007), Melbourne (2009), Liverpool (2011) and Riga (2013). The
entanglements among practice, theory and method within media art,
design, science and technology are increasingly critical to academic and
cultural milieus. Concurrently, the inclusion of artistic disciplines
involving technological-cultural instruments, concepts and methods is
increasingly supported internationally by granting agencies and policy
bodies. This has facilitated the emergence of practice-driven research
paradigms, along with questions of method, validation, opportunities and
problematics that such paradigms imply. Hence, Re-Create 2015
proposes the central question of what theories, methodologies and
techniques can be used to understand past, present and indeed, future
paradigms of creative material practice involving technologies within
research contexts, from a historical and critical point of view.

The concept of “research-creation” in Québec and later Canada at the
end of the 1990s put forward an integrated model of theory and practice,
as well as experimentation and creation in which the interpretive
disciplines (humanities and social science) are linked together with the
creative ones (art and design). For twelve years, Hexagram, the
interuniversity Centre for Research-Creation in Media Art, Design and
Technology is an ideal site to focus on the question and impact of
research-creation in the histories of media art, science and technology.
Its researchers are internationally recognized for developing
methodological and practice-based strategies and are actively
contributing to the role of interdisciplinary research frameworks in
Canada and abroad.

The conference will have three streams: theory, method and practice.
It will embrace the intercultural and interdisciplinary connections
between media studies, film studies, art, design, art history, computer
science, science studies, philosophy, cultural studies, human geography,
anthropology, sociology and music, among others, and these disciplines
impacts on the development of media art, science and technology.

“Responsive Environments – On the Interrelation between Location, Atmosphere, and Digital Media”

CFP for the Panel: “Responsive Environments – On the Interrelation between Location, Atmosphere, and Digital Media”
Deadline for Abstracts: July 15, 2014
Chair: Dr. Christiane Heibach / Andreas Simon / Jan-Lewe Torpus
Institute of Experimental Design- and Media Cultures, Basel, www.ixdm.ch

Keywords
Responsive/Sensitive Environment, Embodied Interaction, Holistic Experience, Atmosphere, Extended Human Senses, Affective Computing, Media Art, Artistic/Design Research, Adaptive Architecture
Panel-Description
Since the emergence of computer technologies the notion of „location“ has been expanded. From the beginning, digital media were seen as world-generating technologies being able to create alternative forms of „locations“, e.g. virtual environments. Currently, tendencies like ubiquitous computing and wearable computing point to a further dimension of “location”: hybrid spaces in which moving, multi-sensing, and interacting may reach new levels of intensity. This causes a paradigm shift in digital technologies, because the simulation of virtual spaces is substituted by experiments with interaction and digitally expanded perception in physical space. Thus, mobile and pervasive technologies will change the future design and artistic opportunities of Human-Computer-Interfaces. Furthermore, their extended responsiveness will modify the individual’s perception and notion of the self.
The panel aims to discuss different artistic approaches to hybrid spaces and the notion of “location”, starting with our own project of a responsive environment, which is designed as physical space, composed of different materials and changing atmospheric components like shapes, light, sound, smell, temperature or airflow. Using sensory and feedback technologies we aim to establish a close relation between the humans and this environment to question the idea of an immediate experience as it is currently discussed in phenomenological approaches like those of Brian Massumi and Mark B.N. Hansen.
We want to invite artists and researchers working in similar directions to generate an interdisciplinary approach which promises to match theory, art and holistic experience. By this we also aim to critically reflect the consequences of current technological developments heading towards an “interfaceless“ connectivity between humans and machines (like in biofeedback technologies) and/or the design of an ‚intelligent‘ environment (as intedend e.g. by ubiquitous computing applications).

Call for Papers FLUID 28th Annual Conference for the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts October 9-12, 2014 Dallas, Texas

The concept of fluid in the arts, sciences, and humanities evokes
multiple, overlapping definitions that work across and around the edges
of disciplinary boundaries. Fluid can describe the property of flow,
particles that move freely among themselves and that form and deform
under pressure. It can refer to liquids both bodily and cultural, for
example, blood and capital. It evokes anything that is not solid, fixed,
or stable.

For this year’s conference, we encourage presentations, papers, and
artworks that explore fluid as a word, idea, and process applied to
borderlands, canvases (and other media in other art forms),
philosophical indeterminacies, or dynamic systems, to offer a few
suggestions. This is a deliberately expansive topic intended to appeal
to a broad range of work in fields, including

  • bioarts
  • critical media theory
  • bioethics
  • medical humanities
  • new frontiers in digital media
  • animal studies
  • liminal studies
  • environmentalism and ecological studies
  • science and critical race studies
  • the history and philosophy of science
  • gender and/in science studies
  • rhetoric
This list is suggestive, not exhaustive. Other topics falling within the boundaries of SLSA work will also be welcome.

Abstracts of 150-250 words are due by April 30. Panel proposals must include full contact information for all panelists.

November 9-14, 2014 Paris, France

Paper and artwork submissions due June 15, 2014
http://visap2014.sista.arizona.edu

The IEEE VIS Arts Program, or VISAP'14, showcases high-quality artwork and
research that explores the increasingly prominent intersections between art
and visualization. Through a dedicated papers track and an art show that
runs concurrently with the IEEE VIS 2014 conference, the Arts Program aims
to foster new thinking, discussion, and collaboration between artists,
designers, technologists, visualization scientists, and others working at
the intersection of these fields.

The theme for VISAP'14 is Art+Interpretation. We are looking especially for
projects and papers that explore the relationships between visualization
research and artistic practice, and that present or discuss creative visual
techniques that emphasize the interpretative or narrative
aspects of scientific or cultural exploration. However, we are open to any
submissions that could challenge or inspire the communities participating
in IEEE VIS. Papers and artworks are due before June 15th, 2014. See the
VISAP'14 website for more details: http://visap2014.sista.arizona.edu

All accepted papers and artworks will appear in the VISAP'14 proceedings.
Additionally, in collaboration with Leonardo/ISAST, we will be selecting
outstanding submissions to appear in a special section of an issue of
Leonardo, the Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences
and Technology.
